She was born in San Francisco California and grew up in Menlo Park a suburb south of San Francisco. Her father Walter Smith was a computer market researcher and the mother Lora was an therapist. Courtney Smith was a resident of the house of both of her parents, at different times. Jennifer is her sibling and works as an executive in the field of advertising. She attended Menlo-Atherton High School (Atherton Calif.) and Tamalpais High School (Mill Valley in California), graduating in 1985. In high school she was also a member of the Ensemble Theater Company of Mill Valley.
